The Port of San Francisco is seeking developers to work with the city on repairing and redeveloping the piers along the Embarcadero. The Port specifically wants to focus on Piers 19, 23, 29, 26, 28, 31, 38, and 40, which are vacant and being used for parking, according to a BisNow report.

The Port previously partnered with developers on Pier 70 to restore historic buildings, and new developments are already in the works. The Port is looking for creative concepts that are financially viable.

In the past, redevelopment efforts along the Embarcadero have seen mixed results. Projects at The Ferry Building, AT&T Park, and the Exploratorium have resulted in more visitors to the areas, but other piers have not enjoyed the same success. A plan to redevelop Pier 38 was abandoned while neighborhood opposition killed a development at Piers 27 to 31.

Success in redevelopment projects could result in more tourism to not only the Piers, but also nearby attractions like Fisherman’s Wharf, North Beach, and the Financial District.
