The 49-acre site of the former Michael Reese Hospital in Bronzeville is going to be completely transformed into a development with the potential for commercial space, retail space, residential space, and a hotel. This multibillion-dollar development could potentially attract Amazon to Chicago, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The new development, Burnham on the Lake, could expand beyond the former hospital site to include more than 100 acres, according to the report. The developers expect to build approximately 14 million square feet of commercial and residential space.

The development team includes Farpoint Development, Draper & Kramer, McLauren Development Partners, Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives, and architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.

“If Amazon or some other large corporation wants to be there, it’s open land where we can build whatever fits their needs. The most important thing is to get Amazon to Chicago, which would be a boom for everyone,” said Scott Goodman, founding principal of Farpoint Development.

Burnham on the Lake is one of many sites suggested in Chicago and its surrounding suburbs. A few of the other potential sites include McDonald’s former headquarters space in Oak Brook, Tribune Media’s River District, and the Lincoln Yards development at the former A. Finkl & Sons steel site.
