Redwood City Study Session Reveals Need for More Retail, Hotels
Redwood City is reanalyzing its blueprint for city development. A City Council study session that included an online retail survey and downtown tour revealed that consumers want a wider selection of retail shops, more major brands, and more amenities.
At a recent discussion, Redwood City Vice Mayor Ian Bain suggested the city should dispel the notion that retail is losing out to online sales, as approximately 96 percent of retail sales still occur in stores, or with online businesses that primarily operate out of stores.
According to a Mercury News report, consultants who ran the study session suggested the city seek retailers that focus on experiences rather than material goods. These kinds of businesses include bowling alleys, bars with arcades, and board game cafes. Consultants also brought up the idea of more “fast casual” restaurants, such as Go Fish Poke Bar. These eateries offer fast service but with healthier options and higher prices.
Council members also liked the idea of bringing a boutique hotel into the downtown area. While Downtown Redwood City already has plenty of new office buildings and housing developments, retail and hotels are far behind. In fact, there is currently not a single hotel downtown.
Some residents also suggested that a downtown park would mesh well with the new retail spaces, creating a homier feel.
