Reopening of San Francisco's Alamo Square Set for May 24
In May 2016, San Francisco’s popular hangout Alamo Square closed for much-needed fixes and installation of a new irrigation system in what was supposed to be a nine-month job. Thanks to copious amounts of rain, the grand reopening was delayed, causing much consternation for locals wanting a place to lay in the grass and tourists looking to take a photo of the iconic Painted Ladies houses across the street.
Now we finally know when that reopening will actually happen. San Francisco Parks and Recreation has announced that the Western Addition park will reopen May 24 with an event set for 11 a.m. that includes a ceremony with speakers and family-friendly activities.
As Hoodline notes, that’s three days after the Bay to Breakers race, which usually fills the park with people celebrating (read: drinking) after crossing the finish line.
The entire cost of the renovation comes in around $5.3 million, but Rec and Park says the new irrigation system will cut water usage by 2.5 million gallons, roughly 33 percent.
