The famous Formosa Cafe in West Hollywood is officially coming back after closing in January. Bar owners Bobby Green, Dimitri Komarov, and Dima Liberman worked in tandem with The 1933 Group, a cocktail bar company dedicated to preservation, to resurrect the historical restaurant.

This isn’t the first time Formosa Cafe faced permanent closure. The bar-restaurant was set for demolition during the early 1990s but due to preservationist outcry, it remained unscathed. The cafe, which opened in 1939, embodied old-school Hollywood glamour and hosted notable celebrities such as Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, and John Wayne.

Many aspects of the bar will stay the same, such as the neon sign, the 1902 train car dining room, and the rooftop deck. They will also bring back the restaurant’s trademark Chinese lanterns and red vinyl booths from the old days, and even add some vintage pictures as decor. However, the back room that previously hosted karaoke and comedy nights will be nixed. Instead, it will become an extra dining area for traditional Chinese cuisine.

The 1933 Group has already signed a long-term lease with the property owners of the West Hollywood Gateway shopping facility. The bar owners recently announced to Los Angeles Magazine they expect to reopen next summer.
