Dove Mountain in Marana will be the location of a new residential development and commercial space thanks to a rezoning decision passed by the Town Council in October despite the protests of a handful of nearby residents, Marana News is reporting.

The current Dove Mountain Specific Plan allows for no more than 9,152 homes. However, by extending into open space, the development will allow for 154 additional homes at about 1.94 homes per acre. The town was careful to make provisions to respect the current open space appreciated by residents, deeming guidelines for a 150- to 200-foot-wide wildlife corridor, riparian area, wildlife linkages, and recreational amenities such as trails.

Noting the balance between open space and development, Council Member Patti Comerford told the Marana News that the town has determined there is enough water to support the future development and that council agreed the rezoning decision would be “critical to the economic growth of the town.”
