As people shop online more and more, D.C.’s police want to help keep those people who purchase goods via sites like Facebook’s Marketplace or Craigslist safe. To do so, three safe zones have been set up in D.C. to facilitate these exchanges, WTOP reported.

“The suspects set up meeting locations and when the victim arrives, a pre-staged robbery occurs,” D.C. Deputy Mayor Kevin Donohue said to WTOP. “To prevent this type of crime, we set up safe exchange zones.”

These safe zones are all located at police stations, so an officer will be nearby if needed, WTOP wrote. They are Special Operation Division’s Harbor Patrol at 550 Water St. SW, Third District at 1620 V St. NW, and Sixth District at 5002 Hayes St., NE.

Despite these being safe exchange spaces, Donohue stressed to WTOP that you should still never meet someone alone to exchange goods. He also recommended never listing or giving out a home address, phone number, or any other identifiable information.

WTOP also noted the issue of potential package thefts during the holiday season. As many have seen in the past, this time of year is ideal for those who may want to walk around and snag packages left on doorsteps.

“Package thefts is an issue we see. It’s occurring in the District and around the region,” said Police Chief Peter Newsham to WTOP. Newsham recommends having your package delivered to you at work, to a neighbor’s house, or to a secure pickup location, such as those offered by the U.S. Postal Service and Amazon.
