WalletHub recently ranked the best large cities to live in, based on a variety of factors affecting residents’ quality of life — everything from public schools to job opportunities to annual property taxes. The results were ranked from one through 62, and quite a few California cities made the cut.

Virginia Beach was the overall leader but San Diego led the way for California, coming in fourth (and just a hair behind Pittsburgh in third). San Diego ranked very high in WalletHub’s metrics in terms of economy (sixth), education and health (seventh), and quality of life (seventh), amongst other categories.

Behind San Diego, San Jose came in at 10th. That was followed by San Francisco (16th), Sacramento (21st), Los Angeles (29th), Riverside (40th), Anaheim (42nd), Oakland (50th), Bakersfield (51st), Santa Ana (55th), Long Beach (56th), and Fresno down at 58th.

Santa Ana and LA were both bottom-five when it came to housing costs, while LA and San Francisco were among the bottom five in homeownership rates. San Francisco was near the top of the list in terms of both restaurants and coffee shops per capita, with Los Angeles also joining the latter list. San Francisco also had the second-highest walking and biking score of all cities.
