San Francisco, Oakland Among 10 Most Walkable U.S. Cities
Looking for some of the most walkable cities in the nation? Look to San Francisco and Oakland, both of which rank among the top ten.
Per Walk Score, San Francisco falls just behind New York to claim the number two spot for most walkable large city in the U.S. With a score that went up 0.4 from last year, SF has an impressive total score of 86.
According to the website, the top cities are only becoming more walkable each year (only one major city went down in score from 2016). Many of these steady increases can be attributed to builders and city officials recognizing that high density housing make it easier for residents to get around and be in close proximity to work and retail.
It’s not surprising that San Francisco would be among the top spots but it might be surprising to see Oakland in the 9th spot, beating out popular cities such as Portland, Minneapolis, and Baltimore. Oakland’s overall Walk Score of 72 is up 0.5 from the previous year.
San Jose also made an appearance in the 20th spot with a Walk Score of 50.5.
