The Goodwill store in San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood is now a thing of the past. The building at South Van Ness and Mission was demolished to make room for a residential tower.

For many San Francisco natives, the Goodwill store was an unofficial landmark of the city, as it stood out in a clumsy but eye-catching way.

The building was sold in 2014 for $60 million to Related California, a developer who plans to build a 39-story, mixed-use high-rise tower on the site. Once complete, the new tower will offer 540 luxury apartments and a handful of affordable units. It will also be right next door to an upcoming 462,000-square-foot office building that will house the San Francisco Planning, Building, and Public Works Departments, according to a Curbed SF report.

While the new residential tower is good news for San Francisco’s lack of available housing, the area is also known for its nightmarish traffic. Once construction gets underway, locals can expect even more congestion in the neighborhood.
