As part of the Bay Area’s efforts to combat the region’s housing crisis, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo announced a 15-point housing plan that aims to complete or have approved 25,000 new homes by 2022.

Of the 15 points outlined in the plan, the mayor highlighted rent-restricted housing for middle-class employees, expanded housing options near the transit center, and increased funding for affordable housing development, according to an NBC Bay Area report.

Of the 25,000 homes that Liccardo promises to build, half of the homes will be built in Downtown San Jose and 10,000 will be affordable housing. Liccardo also wants to build 2,400 affordable homes near the light rail and BART in North San Jose, particularly in the North First Street, Alum Rock, and Capitol Avenue corridors.

Liccardo also pointed out the importance of building homes in business districts to boost foot traffic, which brings more customers to those businesses and thus revitalizes the entire neighborhood.

Meanwhile, Liccardo says he is working on a program to offer rent-restricted housing to teachers, nurses, and others who are struggling to pay their rent.
