In the past month, real estate developers Forest City and QIC have made some significant changes in their joint project, the New South Bay Galleria Project. The plans for this massive venture call for the redevelopment of the shopping center’s parking lots, located nearby Kingsdale Avenue and Hawthorne Boulevard in the oceanside city of Redondo Beach.

According to Daily Breeze, the original proposal called for approximately 300 to 650 new apartments, a land expansion on a stretch of Hawthorne Boulevard, and a new 150-room hotel. However, after these plans were evaluated through an environmental impact review draft, the city voted against creating such a high amount of housing and rejected the land expansion.

Developers have released updated renderings for the project, which now call for a maximum of 300 residential spaces, office space, commercial, retail, and a new neighborhood park. The original 150-room hotel is still included in the revamp. The New South Bay Galleria will also include amenities such as gathering spaces, expanded shops and restaurants with outdoor promenades, and open green areas.

Earlier this year, the city of Redondo voted to slow down the development of new mixed-use project sites, with the New South Bay project barely making the cut by a narrow 3-2 vote from the City Council.

The renovation project is expected to begin construction in 2020 with plans to complete by 2023, after a 40-month period of development.
