Earlier this year, there were California Senate talks of renaming a section of the CA-134 freeway after the 44th President, Barack Obama, who attended Occidental College in Los Angeles from 1979 to 1981. LA City Council President Herb Wesson wants to take the commemoration a step further, pushing to rename Rodeo Road in South LA (not to be mistaken with the famous Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills) after the former president.

If the City Engineer grants Wesson approval, the 3.5-mile street that runs from the east border of Culver City to Mid-City would be renamed Obama Boulevard. The road winds through Crenshaw between Jefferson Boulevard and Arlington Avenue.

Obama has a connection to this particular road. When he was still a U.S. Senator running for the presidency in 2007, his first LA campaign rally was held in Rancho Cienega Park on Rodeo Road. Residents are also familiar with the many traffic-stopping visits Obama made throughout his presidency, so it’s only fitting that the city would want to memorialize him.

If the motion passes, Obama’s name would be added to the list of presidents already memorialized on LA roads, including Washington Boulevard, Adams Boulevard, and Jefferson Boulevard. Wesson has also proposed renaming the region where all of these streets are located as “Presidents’ Row.”
