Redevelopment plans for the failing Shops at Sunset Place are back on the table after the South Miami city commission voted to reconsider them – a day after voting them down, per The Miami Herald

The commission is set to vote Nov. 21 on a motion to reconsider Federal Realty Investment Trust’s proposal to replace a portion of the open-air mall that sits along U.S. 1 with an 18-story hotel and a separate apartment building. The project is viewed as a vital component of plans to improve South Miami’s downtown area.

After voting 3-2 against special zoning rules for the project, residents and businesses urged the commission to reconsider its decision. It’s unclear, however, if the new vote will lead to the project’s resurrection. One of the commissioners who voted against the project asked for it to be reconsidered despite saying he was not ready to change his vote. If the motion to reconsider passes, he said he could agree to defer the proposal to allow time to negotiate aspects of the plan, including the height of a proposed 18-story hotel, that concerned some commissioners.
