South San Francisco Considering New Housing Development Near Civic Center
South San Francisco is taking on some major changes, one of which could be more than 700 residential units directly across from the recently-proposed civic center.
The civic center, which will house a fire station, police station, library, and community center, will be located on the Chestnut Avenue and El Camino Real intersection. Per The Daily Journal, city officials have put out a request for qualified construction builders to help develop and design a residential development across the street.
The residential development is seen as a potential new cornerstone of the city. Often referred to as South City, South San Francisco is looking for ways to build up its independent identity as a place for Bay Area residents to call home.
The lot spans about six acres and was previously owned by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. According to the request the city put out, the land is zoned for buildings as tall as 120 feet, which may fit 120-180 units per acre.
Alex Greenwood, the director for the city’s Economic and Community Development, told The Daily Journal that while the timeline is flexible, the city may reach a sale agreement sometime next year.
