The historic recording studio in San Francisco’s Tenderloin Neighborhood where many prominent musicians once laid down tracks could soon be shuttered.

Hyde Street Studios, originally known as Wally Heider Recording when it first opened back in 1969, may be closed to make room for an eight-story development built behind the studio’s Art Deco facade.

The development would include 94 condominiums built over 16,000 square feet of retail space and an underground parking garage with 14 spaces. Developer Costa Brown Architecture bought the 245-259 Hyde St. building back in 2009 for $3.2 million.

According to a Socket Site report, some well-known musicians that produced music at Hyde Street Studios include Santana, Dead Kennedys, Green Day, Tupac, and Chris Isaak.

While many will mourn the loss of the longest-running multi-room recording studio in the Bay Area, the development project does bring much-needed housing to San Francisco. Another Tenderloin site is also in the works on Ellis Street.
