Located just on the edge of the Santa Cruz Mountains, Los Gatos offers a sense of small-town life with plenty of outdoorsy offerings to go with a chic downtown. Bikers, runners, and dog owners love Vasona Lake County Park, which is ideal for paddle boats and rowboats. The Los Gatos Creek Trail runs for 10 miles, extending from Lexington Reservoir above Los Gatos all the way to Meridian Avenue in San Jose.

Almaden Valley

This established San Jose neighborhood is largely residential and you’ll feel safe walking Fido early in the morning or later in the evening. Look out across Almaden Valley and you’ll spy plenty of rolling hills, golf courses, and views of the city lights below. Consider taking your pup to Jeffrey Fontana Park where there’s separate dog areas for big and small dogs. Keep in mind that the appeal of the neighborhood is reflected in the hefty price tags on homes here.

Tree-lined streets are a common sight in this cozy neighborhood located a stone’s throw away from Downtown San Jose. If you’re looking for a peaceful haven that isn’t too far from the action, Willow Glen might be a good fit. Fido will love a stroll down Lincoln Avenue, which offers a mini-downtown experience full of dog-friendly coffee shops, boutiques, and restaurants.

You’ll find lots of greenspaces here, including Almaden Lake Park which abuts it. The neighborhood is packed with dog groomers, puppy trainers, veterinarians, and boarders. Whatever your dog needs, it’s here.

In fact, it’s considered 80 percent safer than any other city in the entire state. It’s also chock full of pet-friendly businesses and pet stores, so you’ll never have to walk too far anyway.
