If your Thanksgiving travel plans include leaving San Francisco to visit family next week, don’t get on the road Wednesday around 4 p.m. According to Google, that’s the peak time for holiday traffic around the Bay Area based on last year’s traffic data.

Your best bet? Get on the highway Wednesday at 3 a.m. (Just make sure to have plenty of coffee beforehand.) If you’re returning over the weekend, traffic will be lightest Friday around 4 a.m. while the worst backups happen Saturday at 5 p.m.

Google analyzed holiday traffic patterns in 25 major cities around the country, including San Francisco and Sacramento. In California’s capital, you should be out the door on Wednesday at 3 a.m. if you don’t want to sit in traffic. But plan for lots of delays if you leave Wednesday at 4 p.m. Returning to Sacramento, Friday at 4 a.m. will be lightest, but by 4 p.m., there could be gridlock as people rush home after Black Friday shopping.
