If you’re a fan of avant-garde home decor and museum-worthy personal art collections, we’ve found just the tour for you. The Weird Homes Tour showcases an array of unique houses through a self-guided experience. Tours will soon launch in Portland, Oregon and Detroit, Michigan, but the project got its start in Austin and the 2018 Austin Weird Homes Tour took place recently.

Neighborhoods.com had the opportunity to visit several quirky Austin houses during the tour, including these three artisanal South Austin abodes. If you’re looking for some inspiration to make your home a little weirder, you’ll find it in one of these.

Casa Neverlandia

Designed by architect and owner James Talbot in the late 1970s, the aptly-named Casa Neverlandia in Travis Heights feels very much like an oversized version of a kid’s dream playhouse. With Technicolor walls, stained-glass turrets, rope bridges, secret staircases and passageways, a shell-inspired bathtub, a massive living room fire pit, and a huge and leafy garden complete with a treehouse, Casa Neverlandia has a whimsical charm that reminds you of your happiest childhood memories.

Art Oasis

A Barton Hills bungalow loaded with original artwork, the Art Oasis sprang from the mind of owner Valerie, a metal sculptor and avid art collector. Valerie’s husband, an architect, built the house to her specifications, and the resulting structure provides the ideal canvas for Valerie’s vibrant decorative aesthetic. In addition to Valerie’s own sculptures (including a metal portrait of legendary Russian witch Baba Yaga and a spherical piece adorning the front lawn), the house features multiple painted murals, unique tile work, a ceiling fresco, and one-of-a-kind furniture pieces.

Paint By Numbers House

Below Ben White Boulevard in South Austin, you’ll find a colorful little house with an intriguing history. Located on a land parcel that once hosted a famous (some would say “infamous”) pirate radio station known as KAOS, the Paint By Numbers House was designed and commissioned by Dolce Malatesta, a visual artist with a fondness for murals. The facade of the house currently features a paint-by-numbers-inspired mural crafted by Malatesta herself, and she plans to expand the artwork until it wraps around the entire building. The interior of the Paint By Numbers House also pays tribute to Malatesta’s love of colors and patterns, with a rich cavalcade of textiles, paintings, and furnishings.
