Illinois' attraction extends beyond its position as home to one of the country's few true metropolises - it's also considered one of the best states in the country to raise a family. With a higher than average median family income, school systems that are considered some of the best in the country, and a housing market that's affordable and appreciating, Illinois has been a more-than-welcoming destination for start-up families.

But where to start looking once you decide to hang your hat in the Prairie State? We've narrowed the daunting list of neighborhoods in Illinois to three. All have impressive school systems, common space for the kids, and commute times that allow for more time at home.

Barrington Village - Barrington

Driving through Barrington Village, one can see immediately why it's such a popular neighborhood for young families: deep lots provide privacy while abundant natural space allows for common areas that maintain a neighborly, friendly atmosphere. Single-family, attached, and condominium options mean that Barrington Village can accommodate families at any stage. Within the neighborhood are schools, stores, and a variety of businesses, making Barrington Village a convenient place to live.

Crestview Park - Elmhurst

Crestview Park exudes history - some of the homes here date back to pre-World War II -- and contains the idyllic suburban feel that became iconic during the Baby Boomer era. Open green spaces, recreational fields, and a clubhouse anchor the neighborhood, all the while providing single-family and attached homes in a range of sizes to meet the needs of families of all sizes. Residents here are also right across the street from several stores and businesses.

Crestview Park is in Elmhurst, less than 20 miles from Chicago, making commute times reasonable and access to the city convenient with a Metra station nearby. Elmhurst schools also have a perfect score, making this city a major draw for young families.

Tall Grass - Naperville

Naperville is a favorite for Chicagoland residents and its list of accolades is any city's dream: one of the best places to live in the United States in 2014, wealthiest city in the Midwest in 2010, and is widely considered one of the safest cities in the country. Tall Grass complements the desirable Naperville lifestyle with plentiful parks, a clubhouse with tennis courts and a pool, and a selection of homes that range from modest to luxurious. Parks and playgrounds are nearby and walking trails make for a scenic stroll through the neighborhood's green spaces.

Naperville has the school district to match its sterling reputation as one of the best suburbs to call home. Fry Elementary School is within the neighborhood and Waubonsie High School and Scullen Middle School are nearby - all enjoying a near-perfect score from GreatSchools. Chicago is about 40 miles away making for an easy commute. When the weekend finally comes, Naperville provides several attractions for the young ones, including a children's museum, beach, and plentiful recreational areas.
