According to an East Bay Times report, the Hayward Planning Commission recently approved plans for DNS Capital Partners and KB Home to tear down the Haymont Shopping Center in South Hayward. Located at 26601 Mission Blvd., the demolition of the dilapidated old shopping center will make room for a mixed-use development featuring residential and commercial space.

KB Home would construct 35 three-story market-rate townhomes, while DNS Capital Partners would develop 39 market-rate, for-rent apartments and 1,020 square feet of commercial space on the ground floor. The townhomes are projected to cost $600,000 to $650,000. The anticipated rents on the apartments are $2,000 to $2,200 for one-bedroom units and $2,300 to $2,500 for two-bedroom units.

Some of the City Council supported the plan because they believe Hayward needs more market-rate housing. Other commissioners disagreed, believing that more affordable housing options should be made available for low-income Hayward residents.
