Transit-Oriented Development Group Meets to Discuss South Shore Line
The South Shore Line, which runs from South Bend, Indiana to Millennium Station in Chicago, has two major expansion projects planned. The Transit Development District Steering Committee has met for the first time to discuss future developments near several of the line’s stations, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The South Shore Line has yet to receive federal money for its expansion projects but developers are already expressing interest in the surrounding areas, according to the report. Several developers have already spoken with the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority about potential projects.
“We wanted to have lead time in organizing the group. We should be working on the (development) concepts now to be market-ready (when the South Shore projects begin),” said Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority President and CEO Bill Hanna, according to the report.
The transit development group includes community leaders from East Chicago, Michigan City, South Bend, Munster, and more.
The South Shore Line expansion plans include adding double-track capacity from Gary to Michigan City and a West Lake extension from Hammond to Dyer, according to the report.
