There’s no shortage of amazing ski resorts across North America to visit each winter. But one popular Northern California destination really stands out. Truckee was recently named the continent’s coolest ski town, according to Matador

The travel and lifestyle publication ranked 21 ski towns in the United States and British Columbia based on terrain features, quality of local skiing, and overall character and story of the place. Truckee ranked highest, mostly for its laid-back, local feel, and centralized location. It is close to more than half a dozen other ski areas around Lake Tahoe.

“Truckee is rad because it sits in the middle of more ski areas than anywhere else in the West, and yet has none of the glitz of places like Aspen or Jackson,” Matador reports.

Mammoth Lakes, California also showed up in the list’s top 10, ranking in at No. 8. Matador noted its location near Yellowstone and available natural hot springs to enjoy after a day on the slopes. The full list of cool ski towns can be viewed here.
