San Francisco is home to over 850,000 people and each of them live in one of the city’s 40-plus neighborhoods. SF is happy to house historic blocks such as Mission Dolores, Presidio, and Alamo Square. The question is, will a new neighborhood with a historic name be a welcome addition to the metro Bay Area?

The East Cut is about to find out.

Per SFGate, The East Cut is actually a renaming of a portion of current neighborhood Rincon Hill (the area that houses the Salesforce Tower, Millenium Tower, future Transbay Terminal, and spans to Interstate 80.) Or, for those unfamiliar with the area, this region was often lumped in with SOMA, South Beach, Financial District, or the Embarcadero neighborhoods.

The new neighborhood rose from the ground up over the last decade with about 8,000 apartments and condos there or on the way. Rincon Hill and what is now known as The East Cut, however, has been there much longer. In 1869 when Rincon Hill was cut in two to allow Second Street to become a connection from downtown to the waterfront, the east portion of Rincon Hill was severed off, and voila — The East Cut.

The new neighborhood’s website reads, “The name The East Cut is inspired by the Second Street Cut, a defining moment in our history. But, the name also points to our role as the epicenter of the bustling eastern side of the city.”

With a transit terminal on its way, as well as a 5.4-acre park, the rebranding of the east portion of Rincon Hill is well-timed.
