What It's Like Living in Skyhawk, California

Santa Rosa is the county seat of Sonoma County in the urban heart of Northern California’s famous wine country. The wineries, greenery, relaxed lifestyle, and vibrant culture of Santa Rosa are just some of the qualities that have made this suburb a sought-after place to live.

Santa Rosa is also comprised of a variety of neighborhoods, and one that’s known to be particularly ideal for settling down is Skyhawk. Here are some things you might want to know about the suburban neighborhoodof Skyhawk in Santa Rosa.

Homes and Prices

Skyhawk has about 500 single-family homes with some dating back to 1971 and a few built within the last year. You’ll find a variety of home styles, and most residences include four bedrooms and three bathrooms. Although the lots aren’t large, with most occupying just a quarter of an acre or so, the community is able to provide homeowners with a close-knit vibe. 

According to Neighborhoods.com listings, Current home prices in Skyhawk range from the high $500s to high $900s, and the median sale price hovers around $1 million, which is a lower price than many for-sale homes in Silicon Valley. 

Close-Knit Community

Partially due to its separation from the rest of the city, Skyhawk is well-known for having a close-knit community vibe. Families know their neighbors, and children bike and play ball together in the quiet residential streets. For many, it’s an idyllic environment in which to raise a family.

“The thing that made me fall in love with Skyhawk was the people,” said Kristen Garfield, a former resident. “I had neighbors who became my dear friends. Their children grew up with mine. You just can’t find many neighborhoods like that anymore.” 

Excellent Schools

The public schools in Skyhawk are some of the best in Santa Rosa. Austin Creek Elementary School has a 10 rating on GreatSchools, while Rincon Valley Middle School and Maria Carrillo High School have nine and eight ratings, respectively. Families with school-aged children can rest assured knowing their kids will have access to some of the best public school education the Bay Area has to offer. 

Outdoor Recreation

Located at the northeastern edge of Santa Rosa, Skyhawk is just a short drive away from Trione-Annadel State Park, which features hills covered in dense, picturesque forests as well as miles of walking and biking trails and a lake for fishing. With more than 5,000 acres of land, this park offers plenty of open space as well as the chance to explore the beautiful outdoors to enjoy nature.

Galvin Community Park is a dog-friendly space that’s perfect for kicking a ball around or laying out a tasty picnic, while Howarth Park is the ideal destination for a fun family outing as it features a scenic lake and a small train for the kids to ride on.

What It’s Like to Live Here

Living in Skyhawk, you’ll immediately feel like you a part of the community. The small size of the neighborhood, the relative seclusion, and the welcoming layout of its design all lend themselves to a strong community spirit. You’ll find peace in the endless greenery and the comfortable, outdoorsy atmosphere that makes Northern California’s wine country so famous.

With major parks and greenspace situated so close to Skyhawk, there are plenty of opportunities for walking, hiking, biking, and even rollerblading or skateboarding. You’re also situated near major freeways like the 101 and Sonoma Highway, which allow for day trips to major cities in the Bay Area such as San Francisco and Napa.

At just over an hour-and-a-half, the commute to San Francisco is a bit too long to be considered convenient for commuters, but it’s still doable for those who have to drive into the city. The commute to Napa is a bit closer, at approximately 50 minutes.
