Summer and winter sometimes seem like the only two seasons in Chicago, but we do actually get a few weeks of spring and autumn. With summer winding down, the city’s residents have crisp weather, changing colors, and fall activities to look forward to before the onset of winter. Whether you want to enjoy fall with a hot drink and a good book or a brisk run outdoors, the city’s neighborhoods are ready to oblige. Check out upcoming fall events in these seven neighborhoods.

Hyde Park

Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago

Hyde Park is a beautiful place to live any time of year, but autumn gives the neighborhood an extra splash of color. Walk along Midway Plaisance Park and through the Gothic buildings of the University of Chicago campus when the leaves begin to turn shades. Plus, fall is the perfect time of year for a museum visit, and Hyde Park is home to the Museum of Science and Industry.

The University of Chicago also hosts a Halloween concert for families. This year’s Witches, Winds, and Whirls!—performed by the Hyde Park School of Dance and University Symphony Orchestra—takes place on Oct. 27.

Lincoln Park

Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago

Lincoln Park offers plenty of scenic spots to revel in the cooler weather. Sit outside at the Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool, or warm up in the display houses at Lincoln Park Conservatory.

If you’re looking for some adult fun in the neighborhood, you’re in luck. The Theater on the Lake is hosting Bloody Mary Fest on Oct. 14. Come sample the city’s best bloodies and help crown the festival’s champion cocktail. Lincoln Park Zoo is also hosting two Adults Night Out events, one on Oct. 18 and one on Nov. 29. Experience the zoo after-hours, and take advantage of the cash bars.

Lincoln Park Zoo, of course, doesn’t forget about families with kids. On Oct. 27, the annual Spooky Zoo event brings trick-or-treaters together for candy, costumes, and Halloween fun.

Lincoln Square and Ravenswood

Ravenswood neighborhood of Chicago

Lincoln Square and Ravenswood are close North Side neighbors that often put on events through a shared chamber of commerce. This fall, residents are invited to attend the 31st Annual Lincoln Square Ravenswood Apple Fest on Oct. 6 and Oct. 7. Indulge in candy apples, fresh apple pie, and hot cider while you enjoy the festival’s live music.

Fall food seems to be a big theme in these two neighborhoods. On Oct. 12, the nonprofit Crossing Borders is hosting the Eat, Drink, Korea event at the Ravenswood Event Center. The evening will feature food from chefs around the city with all proceeds going to the nonprofit, which supports North Korean refugees.

Oktoberfests are a time honored fall tradition, and Dank Haus German American Cultural Center in Lincoln Square is hosting its own on Oct. 20. The event is free to attend, and guests are welcome to enjoy all of the German food they can possibly eat.

Streeterville

Streeterville, home to Navy Pier, has no shortage of events to lure you outdoors—but if you want to stay inside, there are other events happening in the neighborhood this fall. The 54th Chicago International Film Festival will be screening films at the neighborhood’s AMC River East 21 theater from Oct. 10 to Oct. 21. Experience films from across the world. Anyone who lives for film awards season will appreciate this neighborhood event.

Uptown

Graceland Cemetery and Arboretum in Uptown is an achingly beautiful spot in the fall. Visitors can appreciate the landscaping and architecture of the cemetery, which has more than 150 years of history.

If you’re looking for a more active fall event, the route for the Hot Cider Hustle 8k takes you right along Lake Michigan in the Uptown neighborhood. Enjoy the view at a brisk trot or leisurely stroll. Hot cider and caramel apples are waiting for all of the runners and walkers at the finish line.
