I'm sure the teachers are doing what they feel is best for thier students given the resources they have and know how to use. But when the district adopts a new LA/Math program and the teachers are implementing it blindfolded, who is reaping it's benefits? Unfortunately, my son had to edure this school year with both new programs and implementation that was not maximized to its full potential. Teachers need complete training on new programs before they are implemented and that is the case for EVERY district, not just HLPUSD. Kindergartners are assessed to help with curriculum alignment/preparation for the upcoming school year. But, from my experience, it does not seem the data was even utilized properly. My child had to repeat many standards/ motor skills he had already mastered prior to entering his kindergarten school year. I asked for challenging homework and the teachers finally sent higher-level work home, but did not remove his regular work . The higher-level work was just added on top of his regular work. As a teacher and mother, I made accomodations to the assignment packet and had to constantly write notes in his packets to my child's teachers. I would really appreciate if the kinder team would utilize the information gathered from the Kinder Assessments to accomodate the students who are above 'thier' curriculumn.
