Around Claremont
Living near Claremont Park has its appeal. As does living away from the Cross Bronx Expressway, whose noise and traffic can be deafening. The eastern side of the area boasts accessibility to trains and buses, while also landing those who live there closer to the larger Crotona Park. Clay Avenue is a neighborhood thoroughfare that’s also home to lots of apartment options.
Dining options are few and far between in Claremont. In contrast to other neighborhoods in the Bronx where food feels the specialty, Claremont is more residential with a scattering of small restaurants. East 170th Street, which turns into Clay Avenue, is home to many establishments. Third Avenue, which runs from the top to the bottom of the neighborhood, is another safe bet for those looking for something to eat.
Claremont is home to an apartment building of average height and a quite unremarkable curb apparel. The nearby Claremont Village is home to a grouping of tall apartment complexes clustered together. There are few single-family homes in the neighborhood. Wide streets, the result of busy connection to the rest of the borough, are lined in grey buildings. The park is charming in its attention to detail, and commerce is sprinkled throughout the neighborhood unassumingly.
Keep things casual for a night in Claremont. Start with dinner and dessert at one of the local eateries. Many of the fast-food establishments stay open quite late, which can make for exciting evening plans. If you’re in the mood for dancing or more upscale restaurant offerings, make the trip to nearby Harlem.
Sunday morning in Claremont has to start with a walk-in Claremont Park. Pick up breakfast from Mela’s, a neighborhood institution, and explore the winding paths and open fields. Take a long walk or a short bus ride to the New York Botanical Garden for stunning nature views and a mini-escape from Claremont.
Subway offerings in Claremont are nonexistent, but luckily, there’s a Metro North stop that cuts commutes into the city. Getting to Grand Central Station by car or by train takes about 30 minutes. Traveling around the rest of the Bronx is easiest by buses, which run locally and often. The drive to JFK International Airport is about 30 minutes.
