Downers Grove is a suburb on the southern end of DuPage County that is appreciated by residents for its ideal location near highways and rail lines, excellent public schools, and comparatively low cost of living when compared with other major cities in the county. Living in Downtown Downers Grove means being closer to its historic business district and busy Metra train station.

The cost of living in Downers Grove is comparable with much of DuPage County with slightly higher than average tax rates that are used to fund excellent public schools and efficient city government services. Home prices in Downtown Downers Grove are, on average, less than comparable homes in the downtown areas of nearby Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, and Naperville and similar to that of Lisle’s downtown neighborhood.

Living in Downtown Downers Grove means having easy access to public transportation both to and from Chicago. The BNSF Metra train line has a station at the corner of Main Street and Burlington Avenue and along with another on Belmont Road just to the west of the downtown area. Suburban Pace busses run with frequent stops along Main Street and Maple Avenue. Getting around the region by car is also quite easy with Interstate 355 about three miles to the west and Interstate 88 less than two miles away to the north. Interstate 55 is effectively the city’s southern border make this an ideal suburb for commuters.

Downers Grove is served by school districts 58 and 66, depending which area of the city students reside within. There are several primary schools and two middle schools within the public school districts. There are also two high schools: Downers Grove North High School and Downers Grove South High School. Additionally, Downtown Downers Grove is home to the highly-regard Avery Coonley School serving K-8 students. Educational standards and performance are exceptionally high, with most organizations ranking Downers Grove public schools in the ninetieth percentile or greater nationally.

The downtown region of Downers Grove is known for its boutiques, galleries, and both family and fine dining restaurants. The Tivoli Theater is popular with locals looking for enjoy a little Hollywood nostalgia at this beautifully preserved movie palace. Downers Grove celebrates its small-town roots with several annual festivals like Founders Day, Fine Arts festival, and the popular summer Sidewalk Sale. Parades on the Fourth of July and Memorial Day bring out the high school marching bands, scouts, and civic organizations. Both the park district and excellent public library have calendars full of events for residents of all ages.
