The cost of living in Downers Grove is comparable with much of DuPage County with slightly higher than average tax rates that are used to fund excellent public schools and efficient city government services. The BNSF Metra train line has a station at the corner of Main Street and Burlington Avenue and along with another on Belmont Road just to the west of the downtown area. There are several primary schools and two middle schools within the public school districts. There are also two high schools: Downers Grove North High School and Downers Grove South High School. Additionally, Downtown Downers Grove is home to the highly-regard Avery Coonley School serving K-8 students. Educational standards and performance are exceptionally high, with most organizations ranking Downers Grove public schools in the ninetieth percentile or greater nationally.
The downtown region of Downers Grove is known for its boutiques, galleries, and both family and fine dining restaurants. The Tivoli Theater is popular with locals looking for enjoy a little Hollywood nostalgia at this beautifully preserved movie palace.
