Around Downtown Joliet
Downtown Joliet is known as a historic neighborhood holding the suburb’s best restaurants and entertainment. Rialto Square Theatre is the city’s prized jewel, and the Joliet Public Library is impressive landmark as well. The downtown has made headlines recently for its ambitious plans to restore and redesign the area with a new plaza. The city already built a 6,000-seat baseball stadium in 2002 to host the Joliet Slammers downtown.
The cost of living is Joliet is much lower than the rest of the state, and its downtown housing market runs the gamut from modest and affordable to spacious, Queen Anne-style dream homes. Many former residents of the city of Chicago and Cook County move out the Joliet in order to afford a better life on their income. The home prices are much lower, allowing for more property and a larger home at a much more modest price than you'd find in the city or near suburbs. If you are working within the city of Chicago, the commute time can be lengthy, but many people find it worth the extra time to have additional expendable income and all of the amenities that come with the area.
Joliet has long been a hub of travel due to its access to the railways. For those wishing to commute about the state, there are a number of options. The last stop on the Metra line is Joliet's downtown station. A commuter can take that train right into Chicago's Union Station. There are also PACE buses available and the Amtrak runs from San Antonio Texas to Chicago, with a stop in Joliet. For those who wish to travel by car, Interstates 55 and 80 run through Joliet with multiple Illinois and US highway routes accessible as well.
Joliet boasts excellent options in education. Joliet Public School District 86 serves most of the students in K-8 who reside in Joliet. The city also has three high schools—Joliet Central High School (located downtown), Joliet West High School, and Joliet Catholic Academy. The first community college ever established in the United States was Joliet Junior College, which is still flourishing today. The University of St. Francis is also located in Joliet.
Rialto Square Theatre hosts comedians, musicians, and more. The Joliet Farmers Market is held on Fridays during the summer. Local vendors bring fresh produce, baked goods, and crafts. Joliet residents might also catch a baseball game at Joliet Route 66 Stadium on a warm day. Of course, many of the community’s favorite restaurants are at the ready year-round.
