Around Eastlake

Living close to the water offers residents spectacular lake views and easy shoreline access. Houseboat residents enjoy a unique waterfront lifestyle where the lake is their backyard. Homes along Fairview Avenue East in the northern part of the area have stellar views of Seattle’s unique industrial architecture, Gas Works Park. On the southern edge of the Wallingford neighborhood on Lake Union, the structure was built as a gas plant then later turned into the public park it is today. Homes east of Eastlake Avenue East and west of Interstate 5 tend to be more affordable.

Eastlake is home to a plethora of long-established restaurants on or near Eastlake Avenue East. Grand Central Bakery is a great bet for breakfast and lunch. Siam serves traditional Thai food in a sleek, bright dining room. Sushi Kappo Tamura is known for its innovative sushi that uses ingredients from its rooftop garden. Since 1993, Serafina has been a neighborhood staple and is popular for its multi-regional Italian fare.

Eastlake is one of the prettiest Seattle neighborhoods consisting of hilly streets that gently slope down toward the water. Most streets are shaded by an abundance of foliage. Housing styles range from Craftsman bungalows and Tudors to modern townhomes and a few Spanish Mission Revival buildings. On the lake, charming sea planes take off and land on the water. Many boats line the marinas from tiny dinghies to magnificent yachts, and the Space Needle can be spotted from most of the area.

Haymaker offers freshly made Italian fare and a well-curated wine list for a deliciously relaxed kick-off to the weekend. For a rowdier time, head to the area’s beloved bar Eastlake Zoo Tavern. This long-time dive bar houses a ton of games from pool and pinball to skeeball and shuffleboard.

Start your Sunday at 14 Carrot Café, which has been serving hearty traditional breakfast fare since 1977. Head to the Center for Wooden Boats in nearby Lake Union Park. This unique museum provides hands-on boating and sailing training in addition to preserving the maritime history of Seattle. Nearby, the Museum of History and Innovation (MOHAI) is also dedicated to promoting Seattle’s rich history through interactive exhibits, events, and workshops. For the adventurous, Seattle Seaplanes offer scenic flights of the city and eastside in one of their Cessnas.

The neighborhood has limited public transportation, so most residents rely on cars for commuting. South Lake Union Line’s brightly colored streetcars head north to Eastlake from the Westlake Hub in Downtown Seattle. They stop on Fairview Avenue East at the world-renowned Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. King County Metro Bus Line 70 goes from the University District, through Eastlake and on to Downtown Seattle. The neighborhood is also very walkable and bikeable, making it easy to get around the area without a car.
