Around Flatlands
Amersfort Park sits almost exactly in the middle of the neighborhood, making it a much needed respite from the rows of houses and businesses. Colonial details flank many of the buildings in the neighborhood and there is a slight old-world feeling visible in the architecture. Housing options range from small apartment complexes to the more common single-family homes.
Like much of southwest Brooklyn, the attraction to the neighborhood doesn’t lie in the plethora of culinary adventures. Flatlands has a few eateries offering Italian, American, and West African specialties. Residents can check out a variety of lunch spots as well as a few small diners along Flatbush Avenue where you’ll see locals who have been frequenting their favorite spots for decades.
The main stretches of commerce in Flatlands are Flatbush Avenue and Utica Avenue. Locals do much of their shopping at Kings Plaza, which borders Marine Park and is across from Mill Basin. Two Brooklyn Public Library branches are located in the neighborhood. Buildings are quite low to the ground, have a worn-in charm, and give Flatlands a historic vibe.
Nightlife isn’t really an option in Flatlands, but the neighboring Sunset Park offers places to dance, like Mister Saturday Night. Head home for Katou if you’re in the mood for phenomenal Haitian food. Try out Topaze for Jamaican fare, and no matter what, end at Scoops Kosher for an ice cream sundae.
Consider a stop at the Flatbush Food Co-op to stock up for the week and engage with the community. Jilly’s Coffee Off the Corner is a popular local spot for coffee and catching up. Take a long walk along Paerdegat Beach, renting a kayak if the mood strikes or simply taking in Jamaica Bay.
There are no subway options in Flatlands. Local buses provide eventual access to trains like the A, C, 2, and 3. The commute into Penn Station is around an hour this way and not much better by car. Reaching neighborhoods like Brooklyn Heights or Downtown Brooklyn takes just about as long. Owning a car is popular, though less homes are equipped with garages than other neighborhoods in the area.
