Around Fordham

If living in Fordham has anything to do with the university, which it does for many residents, then proximity to the campus is a must. This is hardly a misfortune, considering its charming buildings and lawns. Otherwise, there are lots of low to mid-rise apartment buildings scattered throughout the area. Living as close to the Metro-North stop as possible is key to short commutes into the city. Proximity to the Hudson River and Bronx Park are generally desirable, as well.

Grand Concourse, a thoroughfare of much of the Bronx, is home to countless dining options. African cuisine sits next to Chinese restaurants, which are also next to Puerto Rican eateries and a small seafood spot. The presence of the campus keeps a plethora of affordable, easy carry-out options in business nearby. For a more formal meal, heading to the nearby Belmont for Italian cuisine is always a festive option.

Poe Park and St. James Park dot the neighborhood but hardly stand in comparison to the colossal Bronx Park. Fordham University’s gothic buildings and well-manicured campus give the neighborhood a stoic feeling year-round. There are side streets that feature historic homes that have been carefully preserved. Other streets offer housing in multi-level buildings. There are some big-box retailers, but for the most part, shops are local. Fordham Shopping Center is a metropolitan stop for almost every shopping need.

Check out a movie at either Concourse Plaza Multiplex Cinemas or Paradise Theater. Both offer a frequent rotation of films, old and new. For dinner, try living like a student at National Restaurant & Coffee Shop, the favorite diner of the neighborhood. If you’re keen, go dancing at Salsa Con Fuego or Fiesta for an exciting end to the evening.

A local campus promises lots of excellent coffee shops for studying or just relaxing. Make the most out of the Sunday afternoon studying crowd by stopping by Nick’s Garden Coffee Shop or MC Bakery and Coffee Shop. Explore the Bronx Zoo before the crowds, as well. Try the Fordham Rose Hill Campus Bookstore for the latest novel and take it to one of the benches on campus to indulge in an afternoon of relaxation outdoors.

A variety of public transportation options makes Fordham feel close to much of what the city has to offer. The B and D subway lines serve the neighborhood, which can offer a commute into Grand Central Station in around 40 minutes. The more popular option is using the Metro-North, which can take as little as 20 minutes. Street parking is common, which makes owning a car a semi-popular choice for Fordham’s residents. Walking within the neighborhood is also common, making this neighborhood’s amenities accessible by foot.
