Decatur is a tight-knit community just minutes from Downtown Atlanta with a lot of local pride among its residents. It’s a desirable location for families with one of the best independent school systems in metro Atlanta. It has a small-town, historical charm with many modern attractions that combine the best of both worlds.
Cost of Living
Because of its close proximity to Atlanta, excellent and sought-after school district, and pleasant downtown, the cost of living in Decatur is considerably higher than the Georgia average and higher than the national average. The median price of a home in Decatur is typically in the upper midrange. However, there is access to plenty of affordable groceries and shopping.
Decatur is in a convenient location technically outside of Atlanta, but so close that it feels like an extension. Main streets Ponce de Leon Avenue, College Avenue, and Clairmont Avenue connect Atlanta with Decatur. It’s a 30-minute or less drive to the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. There are three MARTA train stops including one right downtown for easy public transportation into the city.
Decatur has its own independent school system, the City Schools of Decatur. It includes four neighborhood elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. There are approximately 5,600 students enrolled and a total of 200 teachers, over 70% of whom have advanced degrees. Agnes Scott College, an acclaimed women’s college, and Columbia Theological Seminary are among the higher education institutions in Decatur. Consistently, Decatur students receive above state and national average test scores and the district is ranked top 10 in the state for SAT performance.
Decatur is a beautiful, pleasant suburb with many historical points of interest, like the Oakhurst and Clairmont Avenue neighborhoods with their preserved architecture, the Decatur Cemetery, and the Pythagoras Masonic Lodge. Downtown Decatur is a destination for independent shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants that residents of all ages congregate at to explore. There are also venues to see music, like the famous Eddie’s Attic where many well-known songwriters have played. Some of the restaurants in Decatur are among the best in Atlanta with options for farm-to-table, American bistro, Spanish, Italian and more.
