We school choiced my sophomore into Hiram at the beginning of his freshman year. He is an IEP student with depression/anxiety who has struggled since elementary school but, between the emotional support throughout the school and the academic support from his teachers, he made all A’s and B’s this year. It wasn’t easy, but he actually enjoys being there and really applies himself in ways I’ve never seen before. His reading lexile doubled this year alone. His counselor called me several times this year because his teachers noticed some depression/warning signs and wanted to check in. Every single one of his teachers from both semesters showed up to his IEP meeting, with smiles. He’s also trans, and the administration and staff is both supportive and constantly trying to learn and grow in that area - there’s some bullying, but they’ve handled it before we’ve even had the chance to report it. It’s been an unexpected blessing being at Hiram.

We have had a positive experience at this school however, there seems to be a huge gap in academics amongst the students. The teachers are doing the best that they can with the resources they have. There needs to be more college preparation.

My daughter is a junior and she constantly complains that teachers don"t teach or don't know how to teach. She comes home so frustated. Thank goodness for educational videos on youtube. Teachers get an attitude when you ask a question. She has one teacher who is always on his computer. I want to go to the school and complain but she fears retaliation from her teachers. Next semester homeschooling.
