Where to Live
Graduate Hospital is a walkable neighborhood where you'll be within walking distance to casual restaurants, cafes, and bars. Many locals find their home on Bainbridge Street as it's parallel to the busy South Street nightlife scene. On the west side, you'll be near a pharmacy and cafes, and on the east side you'll be near the Lombard South Subway Station and a few small eateries. A small park and playground are off South 18th Street that provide some space for outdoor recreation.
Where to Eat
The restaurant scene in this area is vibrant and diverse, with some long-standing neighborhood favorites as well as new eateries flocking to this spot each year. Mediterranean, Mexican, Thai, American, Chinese, Jamaican, Indian, and Italian are just some international cuisine options to choose from. One of the neighborhood's popular restaurants is The Sidecar Bar & Grille that's known to be busy with locals and tourists and features creative menu items like beer can chicken and pretzel-crusted chicken fingers. You'll also want to check out Ultimo Coffee on Catherine Street, which offers gourmet coffee and light pastry bites within a chic-industrial setting.
What You'll See
Tree-lined streets and red-brick sidewalks flanked by red-brick 19th and 20th century row homes as well as newer construction single-family homes. The neighborhood has a charming and energetic vibe where residents are often found chatting, jogging, walking, or playing outdoors. You'll see people having coffee at the local café or shopping at one of the boutique shops. Many professionals and graduate students also reside in this neighborhood. Given the growth of the area, you'll experience some parking difficulties, especially on the weekends. West South Street is busy and will have the most congestion.
Friday Night Fun
You'll find plenty to do by night in this lively neighborhood. There are a variety of cocktail bars, lounges, and late-night eateries found throughout the area. The Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts on Broad Street is a great entertainment venue for live jazz. Be sure to check out the eclectic late-night comfort food at The Sidecar Bar & Grill on Christian Street and South 22nd Street. Other notable Friday fun spots include Grace Tavern and Devil's Pocket Food & Spirits. The neighborhood is also well-lit so taking an evening stroll or jog isn't uncommon.
The Perfect Sunday
Graduate Hospital isn't just known for its vibrant nightlife and restaurant scene, it also has a variety of amenities and activities that suit all lifestyles. There are yoga, fitness, and meditation studios. Enjoy brunch at one of the restaurants on South Street and complete your Sunday by shopping for the week at one of the markets on South 23rd Street.
The popularity of Graduate Hospital has seen some of its property values rise each year as more people move into the neighborhood. This close-knit community offers a variety of homes with smaller spaces catering to the student population on the affordable price end while larger residences with updated amenities will be on the higher price point.
You'll get the easiest access to other parts of Philly at the Lombard-South Station. This station is located where South Street and South Broad Street meet.
