I’m currently attending GMSN, and I’d say it is an overall good school. Many, many of the teachers here have had a lasting impact on me, and I legitimately remember what I learned there. However, there’s a handful of things that I’d like to bring up. For one thing, some teachers are changing all the time. LA teachers rarely last longer than 2 years. With this, you get many younger, inexperienced teachers who don’t know the necessary amount of work to put on students. I’m not saying all new teachers are bad, my 7th grade science teacher was new and not only provided a wonderful class, but created one of the school’s most popular clubs by supporting the students who had the idea for it. Another thing I find quite odd about this school is it’s seemingly constantly changing homework procedures. It started with implementation of a “working lunch” program, where if a student didn’t do there homework, they have to turn in a working lunch slip, which says if they don’t turn in their hmwk by 8:30 the next day, they go to basically a silent study hall room for lunch. However, they recently added a “red study hall” procedure which I didn’t even know about until like a week ago. Apparently if you forget your hmwk, you also go to red study hall for the rest of the week, where you’re prohibited to leave the room and it must be absolutely silent. In our school, music class (choir, band and orchestra) goes on when study hall is, so us music students are immune to it. However, we where not even told that it was going to go into effect, so we only got information about it from from our friends. At first I thought it was unfair that they got so much more harshly punished for forgetting homework, but us music students have a music grade to keep up, so I guess it’s fair. One last thing is how so much goes under the radar when it comes to guidance and bullying and such. Kids get called into guidance for rumors started by others or just suspicion more than actual cased get sorted out it seems. I’ve seen one comment that talked about how 5 years ago here the anti bullying stuff seemed like a joke, and I can fully see the school being like that back then. Overall, this school has mostly wonderful teachers and programs, but there are some serious problems going under the rug.

I attended this school five years ago. Granted, there is a possibility that things have changed since then, but my experience was a nightmare. All the anti-bullying rhetoric was a joke, for the most part, and was a punchline for those who bullied. I was bullied, and pretty badly. Bad enough that my parents enrolled me in private school for high school. If you fit into the social order's expectations, I'm sure you're fine, but as a sensitive, quirky, slightly contrary, passionate kid, there was no room for me. If you appreciate the hegemony of white upper-middle class suburbia, where innovation is punished and conformity is the norm, then by all means, send your child here. Be warned, though, that your child will have a tough time if they deviate even slightly from the norm.

This school focuses a lot on anti bullying and offers a very good education amongst other activities. Overall it is a very good school. Only problem coming from a student is that the anti bullying focus of this school seems to be nullifying itself because since this school really doesn't have noticeable bullying or significant fights the teachers and staff really don't know what to look for and there most certainly a lot of bullying going under the radar. I know this for a fact because I have experienced it myself.but This school does have it better than others don't get me wrong.
