Northbrook, IL Neighborhoods and Homes For Sale
Northbrook is a golfer's paradise with three golf courses within its boundaries. One is owned and operated by Northbrook Park District and is open to the public. It also has a golf academy to teach new golfers and help veterans improve their game. The town also served as the backdrop for movies directed by John Hughes, with the Glenbrook North High School used as a backdrop for Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Breakfast Club.
Cost of Living
The cost of living in Northbrook is well over the U.S. and Illinois averages, with housing costs being the largest driver of the increased costs. Northbrook’s cost of living and home prices can be considered in the midrange of Chicago’s northern suburbs. They are considerably higher than some neighboring communities like Wheeling and Prospect Heights, but much lower than in other suburbs such as nearby Northfield and Glencoe.
Northbrook is well-served by all forms of transit. Commuters can get around by bus, rail, or car depending on how they want to get to their destination. The Metra station on Shermer Road is a stop on the commuter rail line that runs from Johnsburg in the northwest and to Chicago in the southeast. Lake-Cook Road is a four-lane roadway that travels east where it terminates at Sheridan Road and goes west to the town of Barrington. Route 41 (Skokie Highway) connects with the Edens Expressway at Lake-Cook Road for southbound travel. Northbound travel on 41 eventually ends at I-94 just south of the Wisconsin border. Pace runs multiple bus routes that head in all directions and transports riders to train stations, the CTA stop in Skokie, office campuses, and major shopping malls in the area.

Northbrook Court is an upscale mall with high-end retailers and well-regarded restaurants. It's been a draw for the North Shore since it opened in 1976. The Chicago Botanic Gardens, while not directly in Northbrook, is just over the Edens Expressway in Glencoe and is one of the most highly regarded cultivated gardens in the region. Parents looking for something to do with their kids will find plenty of activities at the Kohl Children's Museum located in Glenview just to the south of town. Northbrook is conveniently located close to some of the biggest attractions in the northern suburbs of Chicago.
