About Juniata

Juniata Park--or Juniata as residents call it--is a northeast Philadelphia neighborhood. Juniata was farmland until the neighborhood's first rowhomes were built in the 1920s. Since then the neighborhood has seen more residential and retail development, but its greenspaces--Juniata Park, Juniata Golf Club, and Tacony Creek Park--are reminders of Juniata's rural origins.

Around Juniata

If you want to live near the neighborhood's commercial corridors, look close to Kensington, Castor, East Hunting Park, or East Erie avenues. East Hunting Park, Kensington, and Castor avenues have pharmacies, retail, chain restaurants and other spots for quick bites; East Erie Avenue is where St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, one of the nation's top children's hospitals, is located. If you love greenspace and you want to have a place to be active, living near Tacony Creek Park may be your best bet.

You'll mostly find local fast food eateries--including spots for Philly cheesesteak and Latin food--and national chains scattered throughout Juniata. There are few dining clusters, like the Hunting Park Plaza strip mall on East Hunting Park Avenue, which has a few recognizable fast-food restaurants alongside retail, and East Erie Avenue, which has Chinese take-out, pizza, and drive-through chains.

Juniata Park, Juniata Golf Club, and Tacony Creek Park bring out active types, and the neighborhood has many schools and daycare centers. Alongside the neighboorhood's commercial district, including Philadelphia's Coca-Cola production center, are some of the Juniata's original brick rowhomes.

Juniata has its share of bars and lounges with strong drinks and low-key settings, with late-night locals spots on Whitaker Avenue and scattered throughout the neighborhood. But because much of the area is residential and not necessarily known for entertainment, you'll probably leave the neighborhood for the nightlife options of surrounding neighborhoods.

Head to Piccoli Playground where visitors can play baseball or swing around on the playground, to the nearby Juniata Golf Club for a round of golf, or just enjoy a picnic at Juniata Park or the beautiful trails of Tacony Creek Park just off the banks of Frankford Creek. The mostly residential neighborhood lined with greenspace makes for peaceful Sundays.

In Juniata Park you'll find homes that are well-sized for families at low price points. Homes here are mostly rowhomes--some dating back to the neighborhood's residential beginnings of the 1920s--and the most expensive ones are often priced in the low $100,000s.

Juniata is pretty small, so you may be able to walk to the neighborhood's clusters of shops and eateries depending on where you live. But SEPTA buses run down all the neighborhood's main streets, and the Erie Torresdale Subway Station on the corner of East Erie and Kensington avenues will get you to Center City in under 20 minutes.
