Around Laconia
Dyre Avenue is your best bet for those looking to take the subway out of Laconia. There aren’t any parks or notable greenspaces in the neighborhood, so location becomes more a personal preference. As mentioned, single-family homes are scattered throughout the neighborhood, making most locations case-specific. Living near Boston Road is great for getting in and out, but the noise, pollution, and traffic can make for a less than enjoyable living experience.
Laconia isn’t a culinary destination, but similar to neighboring areas, there are fantastic family-owned restaurants operating in unassuming locations on Burke Avenue or Gun Hill Road. This bustling area features a variety of dining options ranging from Jamaican and African to American and Italian fare. There are a few spots on Allerton Avenue as well, where you’ll find local pizza spots like Emilio’s Original Gourmet Pizza and Chef King.
Laconia is perfect for those looking to trade city life for something a little slower paced, a little more spread out, but still very metropolitan. There are plenty of local shopping spots for food and errands. Most outings can be done by walking, considering the area’s small size. There’s a sense of pride in the community, as many families have called Laconia home for multiple generations. The streets are friendly and the loyalty is endearing.
Start the night in nearby Allerton at either Kirvens or Special K Bar. Don’t expect to find nightlife anywhere locally, as Laconia is very family-oriented. Most socialization takes place between friends in their homes, so bars are a tough bet, too. Restaurants offering cocktails and comfort food are typically the social gatherings residents do on Friday nights in this neighborhood.
Wake up early and take the Bx28 or the Bx38 to Van Cortlandt Park and take advantage of what some call “the Central Park of the Bronx.” You’ll find sprawling trails, lots of open space, and plenty of discoverable nature. Walk to Claudy’s Kitchen for Peruvian food on the western side of the park or walk the campus of Manhattan College to view the architecture and explore the other side of the Bronx.
Unlike other neighborhoods, commuting to/from Laconia isn’t an easy feat. Travel time to Grand Central Station is about an hour on the 5 train. Getting to Penn Station is about the same, if not a little longer after transferring to the 1 in Manhattan. Local buses like the Bx12 or the Bx28 make traveling within the Bronx easier, just still slightly unreliable. Owning a car is a fairly popular option for residents in this neighborhood, and luckily some housing offers garage or driveway access. Also, for those who don’t drive, completing errands on foot can be accomplished easily in this walkable neighborhood.
