Chicago, Illinois Homes for Sale

About Longwood Manor

Halsted Street cuts right through the heart of Longwood Manor, a pocket neighborhood that falls under the umbrella of a larger neighborhood, Washington Heights. This far south side zone was once outside of the city limits and annexed in the late 19th century. It has retained much of its original identity as a bedroom community for people who commute and travel into the city regularly.

Around Longwood Manor

Longwood Manor is not nearly as bustling as a neighborhood closer to the downtown area. Expect to see residents grabbing the Metra on the neighborhood's north side, as well as drivers heading in and out of downtown via the 94, which connects to the 57 on the neighborhood's east side.

City dwellers north to south know Halsted Street -- it runs the entire length of the city, after all. That's why it's your best bet in Longwood Manor in terms of finding a place to eat. In fact, you’ll find everything from authentic Chinese, to seafood, to casual sandwiches on this strip. South Vincennes Avenue also has its own highlights, including a Caribbean restaurant.

Three of Longwood Manor's borders are made up by highways; South Beverly Avenue and South Vincennes Avenue create the other two. Within these confines, you’ll find plenty of real estate on the market and at a price lower than places within the city. Most of what's for sale are single-family homes with enough bedrooms to house a brood of kids.

Longwood Manor is a bit secluded from the Chicago charms that typically draw its residents out on a Sunday afternoon. You can't walk to the lake, you won't find boutique shopping, and lines don't wrap around hot brunch spots. However, Longwood Manor does have its charms: perhaps your perfect Sunday would revolve around watching the kids play baseball at the field on 95th and Genoa, or check out a few books from the Woodson Regional Library.

Longwood Manor might not have the clubs and crowds that you'll find closer to Chicago proper, but it has a few spots to blow off work-week steam. On Halsted Street, you'll find a peppering of bars and pubs, as well as places that pour specialty cocktails. If you're looking for even more excitement, head west to Western Avenue, which has a higher concentration of nightlife options.
