Around Maple Leaf

Thornton Creek is a small greenspace in the northern part of Maple Leaf. Here, you’ll find a series of trails through stairways above the year-round creek and pond that is home to beavers. Living close by gives residents easy access to nature while still being in an urban environment. Living off Roosevelt Avenue, 5th Avenue NE, or Lake City Way can make the residential area more walkable with access to local restaurants, shops, and coffee houses.

Residents have a variety of culinary choices to choose from in the neighborhood, most of which can be found on Roosevelt Avenue NE, Lake City Way NE, and 5th Avenue NE. Snappy Dragon is one of the most popular Chinese restaurants in the area and famous for its hand-made noodles in fragrant Mandarin-Szechuan-style sauces. Another neighborhood staple is the Flying Squirrel Pizza, which has been around since 2011 and is known for its pulled pork pizza. Maple Leaf is also home to restaurant/butcher shop The Shambles, a local favorite with an extensive beer menu.

On a clear day, you can see Mount Rainier and the Downtown Seattle skyline from Maple Leaf Reservoir Park’s highest point. The park features sports courts and winding paths through a butterfly garden. You can see its maple leaf adorned water tower from most of the city. The majority of the residential streets are tree-lined, with many featuring aged maples. Architectural styles in the area are quite diverse ranging from a large concentration of brick Tudors to Craftsman bungalows, to the occasional sleek Mid-Century single-family home.

The Maple Pub, a local favorite, features an outdoor beer garden with a walk-up window shaped like a banana that sells hot cocktails in the winter and frozen drinks in the summer. The Kona Kitchen is another local spot where residents can enjoy some Hawaiian fare as well as Karaoke on Friday nights.

Start the day with coffee and crepes at long-time staple Café Javasti. Get some fresh air at the Maple Leaf Reservoir Park, which offers 16 acres of greenspace, play areas, walking trails, and athletic fields. After a walk around the park, check out a puppet show at the Northwest Puppet Center. This mini-museum housed in a converted church has rotating puppet shows and exhibits featuring marionettes and papier-mache masks.

Part of Maple Leaf’s desirability is its proximity to Interstate 5 and Lake City Way for easy commutes. A number of King County Transit buses service the area. The 67 line goes to Roosevelt and the U-District. Along 15th Avenue NE, bus 73 goes to the U-District, as well as north to Northgate Mall and Jackson Park.
