Around Morningside Heights
Sidestreets are home to some of the most charming of Morningside Heights offerings. Riverside Drive might be the most covetable street, with views of the water and quick access to Henry Hudson Parkway. In general, housing located toward the west side of the neighborhood is preferable. Residences bordering Morningside Park are luxury high rises up to a city block in length, offering larger homes with higher price tags.
If you’re hungry then you’ll want to stay on Broadway and Amsterdam avenues. Amsterdam Avenue is home to popular spots like Jin Ramen—adored by locals for its no frills noodles, as well as Max Soha, which is known for its authentic Italian food. Broadway Avenue is also home to Mel’s Burger Bar, Koronet Pizza, and Community Food & Juice, providing residents and visitors alike with plenty of culinary options all within walking distance.
The energy of students making their way to class and families enjoying the scenic route makes for a classic New York atmosphere. Classically stunning pre-war buildings, some outfitted with doormen and amenities, make up a bulk of housing in this area. There are also remarkable brownstones and townhouses, many protected as historical landmarks. Shiny, new buildings have gone up recently as well, but far less than most other Manhattan neighborhoods.
Nightlife doesn’t abound in Morningside Heights, but ask any Columbia student and they’ll remind you that fun is only a train ride away. Follow their lead and take the 1 train to Christopher Street for dinner in the West Village and then jazz at Village Vanguard, all before stepping back onto the 1 train back uptown. There are also a ton of nightlife options in nearby Central Harlem along Frederick Douglass Boulevard, Lenox Avenue, and Malcolm X Boulevard.
The Hungarian Pastry shop is an essential stop for students, visitors, and residents alike. Don’t expect to get a seat, but opt for a walk through the gardens around The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. Make a stop at the Columbia Greenmarket, known for its seasonally fresh produce. Check for a performance at Columbia’s Miller Theater later in the day. You can also browse through the many local shops in the area for books, unique gifts, and much more. After, walk to Morningside Park to enjoy a relaxing day within a beautiful and tranquil setting.
Owning a car is tough, considering most of the neighborhood is residential with limited street parking. Most locals opt for the 1 train, which runs locally but can be easily transferred into express or the M4, M5, M11, and M60 bus routes. Walkability in Morningside Heights is a massive plus with most daily errands being accomplished within the neighborhood’s parameters.
