This school is led by an amazing principal, Mr. Rotosky, and our daughter has had a great first year at Southwest. Her kindergarten teacher Ms Smith has been very kind, and the overall culture of the school is positive and warm. Our daughter was in the spanish immersion program, an amazing opportunity that is the first of its kind in Durham county public schools. The classes are diverse, which is an amazing opportunity for my multiethnic daughter. This is a happy and nurturing place.

We are a former homeschool family who was avoiding a repeat of our own difficult school experiences in NC public schools as children (not in Durham). We did our homework, talked to parents, and enrolled them in Southwest this year and couldn't be happier. The teachers helped with their transition, and everyone was warm, welcoming, and supportive. Both of our children were advanced in some subjects, and they have been kept engaged and nurtured, while being supported in the areas they needed extra help. You can feel from every level how much everyone on staff cares, and it really shows. Ignore the "4" on this website and realize that it only reflects arbitrary test score results that reflect nothing and are largely problematic in their bias. The school is committed to helping ALL children grow, no matter where they start from, and their growth scores reflect that. We are proud to have joined the Southwest families, and recommend it for everyone. The PTA is also committed and caring, and holds great informative workshops for parents throughout the year.

Excellent! The staff is amazing, and my daughter has really enjoyed kindergarten. She’s in the dual language program and loves it.
