Around Oakhurst
Oakhurst has its own spacious park which features volleyball, basketball and fenced and lighted tennis courts. There are also baseball and soccer fields. The Oaks Recreational Club is next to the park and is a members-only club only open to residents of Oakhurst and some of the nearby subdivisions. It features a large swimming pool and the Orcas, a youth swim team with over 100 swimmers. Just outside of Oakhurst is the expansive Fox Valley Park District’s Eola Community Center. It houses a full-size gymnasium, a fitness center, and multi-purpose rooms. A branch of the Aurora Public Library is also on the premises. Nature lovers will appreciate the Oakhurst Forest Preserve is on the community’s west side and the scenic Waubonsie Creek Trail runs along its southern boundary. The trail is ideal for joggers and cyclists as it connects to other trails and the Illinois Prairie Path, providing plenty of miles to run and bike along. Indian Prairie School District 204 serves the area. Steck Elementary School is within Oakhurst’s boundaries and Young, McCarty, and Georgetown Elementary are nearby. Fischer and Waubonsie Valley High School are the closest middle and high schools, respectively. District 204 schools have earned a lot of national and state recognition for excellence. Six of its schools are National Blue Ribbon Award winners, the highest award given by the federal Department of Education. Multiple school rating services give very high marks to the district and its individual schools, some going as far as ranking the district as one of the top ten in Illinois.
There’s no shortage of activities and events in the immediate area. Oakhurst hosts a number of casual events throughout the year, such as community garage sales and holiday events. The Oakhurst Orcas keeps its swimmers busy in the summer months competing in a youth league. At the Eola Community Center, there is an amazing range of programs. There are a lot of programs which one would expect of a suburban park district such as early childhood development, youth and adult sports, 55+ active adult field trips, etc., but there are also some wonderfully unique programs as well. A Lego Robotics and Engineering Academy, puppetry classes for pre-teens, and Irish step-dancing are just some of the unique activities. With Aurora and Naperville on either side of Oakhurst, residents have plenty of entertainment and dining venues to choose from. Both cities have bustling downtown areas with dozens of great restaurants and bars. Fox Valley Mall is just a few minutes away from Oakhurst and is the main feature along the Route 59 shopping corridor where there are even more shops of every kind, eateries and a brewpub. Aurora is home to the historic Paramount Theatre which hosts over twenty major Broadway musicals, concerts and other acts yearly.
