Around Oriole Park

The park and Oriole Park School are at a central location, so residents anywhere in the neighborhood are never far from these amenities. Commuters who frequently use the train may want to live near the Harlem Blue Line station in the northeast corner of the neighborhood. Oriole Park’s condominium buildings are concentrated near the eastern boundary while single-family homes are more prevalent further west.

While Oriole Park has relatively few restaurants, there are a few local establishments just outside the neighborhood serving tasty comfort food. Hot dogs and hamburgers from mom-and-pop stores are second only to pizza from authentic Italian joints. American diners and grills dot the area too, but look out for the occasional sushi restaurant or Asian fusion experiment off the beaten path.

The Harlem Blue Line station features a well-known mural created in 1985 that represents the diverse and hard-working people of the Oriole Park neighborhood and Chicago as a whole. Created by Alex Katz on aluminum and fabric, these faces look out to the highway below, where commuters hurry to the Loop or to nearby O’Hare International Airport.

The nightlife scene is fairly quiet in this family-friendly neighborhood, but there are a few small bars on Higgins Avenue that locals frequent. Residents might also go out on an old-school date to the local drive-in, complete with carhop service, for a burger and a malt.

Take a walking tour of the neighborhood to check out the area’s historical homes. In Old Norwood Park, the Noble-Seymour-Crippen House still stands as Chicago’s oldest existing building. Continue your day outdoors by visiting any of Norwood Park’s beautiful public parks.
