I’ve been extremely happy with the education & care that my children have received at Cheltenham Elementary school. The teachers are absolutely amazing. They’re thoughtful, energetic, and they clearly put a lot of effort into their lessons. Financially, based on all of the major activities and clubs offered to students, I have to say - I can see where our school taxes are going and I can’t complain about that aspect of it.

I believe what the previous writer said. There are new families whom need time to become adjusted to the school system. I would say that the staff are excellent. They should work on the culture of the school in regards to teasing. Other than that....It is an amazing school!!

Rated 6/10? I was wondering why until I took a look at what's going on. When Philly schools got in trouble, some parents (the ones who could afford to move out) relocated to CSD. But the kids who came in had to work extra hard to live up to Cheltenham standards and some were lagging behind. As a result, we have two populations -smart achievers and those who need to do better (they will in time - they are being worked on by teachers and parents, but at the moment drag the scores down I am afraid.) How do I know this? Perhaps I am not your typical parent because I took my time to come sit in class to see with my own eyes what is being taught here. I popped in unexpectedly on teachers sweetly asking is they’d mind me spending some time in the class etc. What I can say with confidence is that the teaching here is world-class – the teachers really know their stuff and how to handle students too! I also understood why we pay the school system well and why the taxes are higher. Because you get what you paid for in Cheltenham! For the record: I am white, somewhat conservative, have 2 graduate degrees, high-paying job and can spare some cash to send my daughter to any private/boarding school in the area, yet I would never even think about it because Cheltenham Elementary provides her with that rich, fulfilling experience she wouldn’t get anywhere else. She does attend Mr. Aungst classes for the achievers and those are awesome! Bottom line: if you want your child to be well rounded and educated (not just schooled)– CES keeps up the pace with the modern world we live in. Note: the principal has changed a few years ago and it made a ton of difference (for the best) even though the previous lady was ok in my opinion.
