Pennsport is a historic neighborhood in South Philadelphia that's between the Delaware River to the east and 4th Street to the west and is surrounded by neighboring Queen Village in the north and Whitman in the south. This small neighborhood features a mix of architectural styles that feature Federal and Colonial styles as well as new construction homes. Pennsport is home to the popular Mummers Parade that takes place every New Year's Day as well as the Mummers clubhouses off 2nd Street.

Around Pennsport

Pennsport has three parks and recreational centers sprinkled throughout the neighborhood. These are off Morris Street, Pierce Street, and Snyder Avenue. Retailers and the United States Postal Service is off Jackson Street and South Swanson Street as well as East Snyder Avenue. In this area you'll also find restaurants, fun attractions for the kids, banks, pharmacies, a coin laundry, and more. Although it gets congested, Columbus Boulevard features big chain stores like Walmart and Target.

Philly has some of the most talked about quick bites, deli's, comfort eats, and gourmet fare around. Pennsport will put you right near the neighborhood's hidden gem, Gooey Looie's on McClellan Street that's known for their overstuffed deli sandwiches and cheesesteaks. There are also a few health-conscious options to choose from on Moyamensing Avenue, as well as bars with hand-crafted cocktails. Pennsport also caters to vegans and vegetarians with spots along 4th Street and Moyamensing Avenue. The neighborhood also offers plenty of multicultural food options such as Dutch, Mexican, Italian, Japanese, Vietnamese, and Southern.

Pennsport is a welcoming area and it's not uncommon to see neighbors chatting outside or people walking and biking throughout the area. A variety of home styles like low-rise and mid-rise red brick buildings with off-street parking are common. Tree-lined parks make for cozy strolls and picturesque views of the distant sky line. There's also an annual parade held on New Year's Day called the Mummers Parade and is one of the most popular events in Pennsport.

Pennsport isn't known for its nightlife but does have some haunts to check out. Given the water and the historical boats docked nearby, residents can enjoy a tranquil evening. Set up an evening picnic and watch the sunset over the river at Washington Avenue Green. Find quick-bites and Southern comfort foods or listen to live music at Warmdaddy's Soul Food off South Christopher Columbus Boulevard to end the night on a good note.

The Delaware River is opposite I-95 for waterfront views. There are parks on the southwest section of the neighborhood and the northwest corner. Head over to Mummers Museum and check out the memorabilia of the annual folk parade. You'll get to view costumes, learn about the music, and more. The warmer months offer a fun and interactive spray water park at Herron Park Sprayground.

Pennsport is changing every day. What was once a pretty economical area is now growing in property value. The price points are increasing as renovations and rehabs take over. The cost of living has definitely increased as the area continues to develop. Houses and condos for sale range from the luxurious with on-site amenities to the red-brick traditional buildings. Depending on what you desire, you can buy at a reasonable price or choose newly rehabbed homes priced on the high end. But overall, you'll be getting more per square foot here than in other parts of Philly.

I-95 runs through the middle of Pennsport so the expressway is accessible if you drive. You won't struggle to find parking because the neighborhood has plenty of street parking, which makes driving less of a hassle too. The SEPTA buses are pretty efficient and run up and down South Front Street, East Moyamensing Avenue, and Washington Avenue. You can also bike or walk throughout the neighborhood.
