Around Sedgefield

Many residents are drawn to the neighborhood because it offers the same types of homes as neighboring Dilworth, but without such large price tags. The area offers a mix of cottages and bungalow-style, single-family homes as well as apartments. For many years there were limited options when it came to apartment rentals, but in recent years, new luxury complexes featuring mid-century modern designs have started popping up along the neighborhood’s edges that border South Boulevard, as South End continues to expand.

Though Sedgefield is mostly residential, there are restaurants continuously popping up along South Boulevard, giving residents plenty of dining options to choose from within walking distance. Local eateries in the area range from Tex-Mex and seafood to popular barbecue joints and craft breweries that not only serve up award-winning cold brews, but also impressive dishes.

Situated between two of Charlotte’s busiest streets—South Boulevard and Park Road—you’d never know it based on Sedgefield’s tranquil, tree-lined streets that are flanked by quaint cottages and bungalows boasting spacious and well-maintained yards. Most days you’re likely to find residents leisurely strolling along the sidewalks, plenty of dog owners walking their pets in Sedgefield Park, while children play on the nearby playground. The recent addition of the Sedgefield Shopping Center with a Harris Teeter and a few other businesses has added some variety to the largely residential area.

Plan to spend the night hopping around popular spots located along South Boulevard. Start the evening with rooftop cocktails and fresh seafood, then make your way over to The Music Yard at SouthBound, which is located between SouthBound and Mac’s Speed Shop. There, you can catch a live outdoor show by a variety of different musicians and entertainers. If there’s no performance scheduled that night, meander next door to BackStage Lounge—a bar meant to mimic a prohibition-style speakeasy and requires a password to enter.

Walk a few blocks over to South End’s Rail Trail—a paved 3.5-mile walking trail that runs parallel to the LYNX Light Rail and is lined with some of the city’s best restaurants, breweries, art galleries, public artworks, and pocket parks. Once you’re on the Rail Trail you can decide where the day goes depending on what you feel like doing. If it’s early, there are plenty of options for a delicious breakfast or brunch like Leroy Fox South End or Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit. Spend the afternoon on a rented bike or scooter riding around to different breweries like Suffolk Punch or Sycamore Brewing. End the day with a scoop or two at Jeni’s Ice cream. Looking for something a little more family-friendly? Sedgefield Park’s playground provides the perfect spot for families to spend the day outdoors together.

Sedgefield is somewhat walkable and bikeable with well-kept sidewalks and some bike lanes. However, residents tend to mostly rely on cars to get from point A to point B while running the majority of their errands. With such easy access to Park Road or South Boulevard, it’s a breeze for residents to get in the car and drive to everything from grocery stores and medical facilities to shopping malls. Public transportation options are fairly limited in the area with only a few Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) bus stops located on South Boulevard. There are a number of Blue LYNX Light Rail stops within walking distance of Sedgefield that residents can use to go into the city or explore South End. The light rail will even take residents all the way to the University area which’s about 20 minutes north of the city.
