Around South Boulder

South Boulder is made of up of several subdivisions built in the last half of the 20th century. Martin Acres, the wedge-shaped subdivision of single-family homes and apartment complexes between Broadway and Route 36, still offers homes from the 1950s at affordable prices compared to other parts of Boulder. Devil's Thumb is tucked in the foothills just below the National Center for Atmospheric Research and within walking distance of Harlow Platts Community Park. Highland Park, the area between Table Mesa Drive and Dartmouth Avenue, features curvilinear streets and lots of green space. Houses on the north side of Stanford Avenue boast sweeping hilltop views.

Since South Boulder is primarily residential, dining options are limited. Fortunately, The Shops at Table Mesa is strategically located at Broadway and Table Mesa Drive. Devoted mostly to shopping and services, there are about a dozen places to get something to eat at this shopping center, including two supermarkets. One popular spot is Southern Sun, a brewery and pub with about 20 taps of their own beer. This bohemian tavern includes cuisine for omnivores and herbivores alike, with a menu that includes locally sourced meats and tempeh, a fermented soybean cake originating from Indonesia. Outside of the shopping center, a handful of tasty eateries serving Italian, Indian, and Nepalese cuisine can be found further out from the neighborhood's center.

You will mostly see one- and two-story homes in this heavily residential neighborhood unless you're near The Shops at Table Mesa, which serves as the area's commercial center. Several impressive parks in South Boulder provide serene escapes for nearby homeowners. Near the south end of the neighborhood is Harlow Platts Community Park, which surrounds Viele Lake and offers walking trails, exercise stations, and a 9-hole disc-golf course. Martin Park is an unexpected surprise near the busy intersection of Broadway and Table Mesa Drive. Residents of the neighborhood gather at this park for picnics, baseball, and tennis.

A Friday night on the south end of town is fairly quiet, and many residents will spend their evenings with friends or family. It's common to see people taking in stunning views of the foothills on an evening walk, especially around Viele Lake or Bear Canyon Trail. The Shops at Table Mesa hold most of South Boulder's nightlife options. Southern Sun is a friendly spot to grab drinks before or after dinner, while Caffe Sole is a fun venue to catch a musical act.

Head to The Shops at Table Mesa for coffee and a bagel or a complete brunch at South Side Walnut Cafe. South Boulder's outdoorsy residents claim the trails leading to Green Mountain and South Boulder Peak as their own backyard. Multiple trailheads extend from the neighborhood's westernmost streets for an invigorating hike. If you fancy yourself a good cook, enroll in a class at Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts. They offer classes and workshops for people who want to learn new dishes and improve their technique.

South Boulder is an increasingly popular place to live and, like most parts of Boulder near the foothills, housing costs are on the rise. Martin Acres, located between Broadway and Denver Boulder Turnpike, is the most affordable section. Expect a high price point elsewhere in the neighborhood. The Highland Park area holds some of the area's most lavish options.

Many residents here have cars, though it is common to see people on bikes using the Broadway multi-use path to get to Downtown Boulder or south to Eldorado Canyon. The Table Mesa Park-n-Ride, which features the only Boulder B-cycle bike-share station in South Boulder, makes it easy to bike or drive, and then jump on a bus to Downtown Boulder or in the opposite direction to Union Station in Denver.
